BMW TOURING panniers for BMW F650 1-cilinders ('Funduro' and ST) built before the year 2000 (NOT fit for F650 GS 1-cilinders!)
When I bought the successor of my BMW F650 GS Dakar (in march 2018), I found a very nice 'low mileage and well kept' BMW F650 'Funduro' from '99.
It was fitted with an original BMW top-case and 2 small panniers, known as:'city cases'.
For 'daily use' these were quite Okay, but they were much too small for serious
camping-trips and holidays.
So I got me a set of original BMW 'Touring' panniers and a large (universal) top-case.
PANNIER-RACK/-FRAME consists of 2 separate 'Z-frames'
As I did not want to buy a complete pannier-set, plus frame,
I tried to find panniers that would fit on the original, so called, 'Z-frames' on my Funduro.
I found out that besides on the BMW F650 series (up until the year 2000), Z-frames were also fitted on BMW K75/K100, as well as on BMW R80/R100 series...
Though those on the BMW F-series (left picture) were made of metal, whereas those on the BMW K- and 'R-series were made of plastic material (left picture).
But the shape and dimensions are exactly the same, and so, the large Touring cases of the 'K-' and 'R-' series can be used on a F650 Funduro and ST...Basically...
MODIFICATION of the left K- or R-Pannier needed for use on an F 650.
After some research in Internet, (BMW Forums as well as F650 Facebook-groups) it turned out to be possible to use (second hand) Touring panniers from K- and R- series on an F650.
For the right pannier no modification is needed, it will fit on K- and R- as well as F- series, as it is!
The left pannier of a K- or R- however, has an extension 'inwards', which will be in the way on an F650, because of the position of it's exhaust..
It's not really difficult to remove the extension, by cutting it off, but the question is: how to close the gap... Though I've seen results of some DIY 'expert', I quess that not many people would know how to go about this 'challenge'...
The good news is, however: SPECIAL left Touring panniers for the BMW F650 exist !
See below !
SPECIAL left pannier for BMW F650
I discovered that Left panniers without an extension did existed especially for the BMW F650.
And apparently even pannier 'bottom parts' without extensions were available somewhere.
These could be attached to the lid- or top-part after the original bottom part with extension had been removed.
Someone in one of the F650 forums or groups mentioned this (showing pictures as well), but I could not find any info about that in the internet.
So I was about to find a K- or R- left pannier and try to modify it myself, when a mate of mine told me about a used set from a Funduro, that was for sale.
So... me happy !
No adjustments needed !
FINALLY
Since not everyone, looking for info about original BMW F650 panniers, knows what possibilities there are , I made this page about my experiences about this matter.
In Internet I found the summary below, regarding Touring panniers that can be used on 'Z-frames'.
Beside our beloved F650 FUNDURO/ST, that is...
